Chocolate

I can’t live without chocolate

Chocolate comes from cocoa beans, Cocoa trees may have gotten their start on the lower slopes of the Andes Mountains. Cocoa trees can only live in hot, rainy places near the Equator.

We could run out of chocolate in 40 years, as climate change makes it too hot for cocoa plants to survive.

Yummy

A temperature rise of just 2.1 degrees centigrade could spell an end for the chocolate industry worldwide by 2050.

The cocoa harvest is not confined to one short period but is spread over several months once or twice a year. The timing of the cocoa harvest varies from country to country, depending on the climate and the variety of cocoa. In countries with a pronounced wet and dry season, the main crop occurs 5-6 months after the start of the wet season

The three main varieties of cocoa plant are Forastero, Criollo, and Trinitario. The first is the most widely used, comprising 80–90% of the world production of cocoa. Cocoa beans of the Criollo variety are rarer and considered a delicacy.
